Rubber surfacing offers a range of benefits:
Recycled rubber repurposes old tires and is primarily suitable for driveways, pathways and other high-traffic areas. While it is more economical then synthetic rubber, it's available in fewer colour options. Recycled rubber prevents about 10 tires from going into the landfill per 100 square feet of surface!
Synthetic rubber is made of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) which means that its durable and flexible with endless colour combinations
For outdoor applications, a rubber surface can be applied to a gravel substrate, old asphalt or concrete without having to remove or repair it. When starting with a gravel substrate, it must be covered with recycled rubber because of its durability. It can then be left as such or covered with synthetic rubber for more colour and design options. For indoor applications, a rubber surface can be installed on concrete flooring or wood.
It really depends on the application. A driveway already paved could be done in as little as one day while more complex work can take several days. The surface is typically ready to be walked or driven on in about three to four days.
Light dirt can be dusted off using either a broom or a leaf blower. For a deeper cleaning, a pressure washer on the lowest setting can be used with mild soap. For outdoor areas exposed to high levels of UV rays, the surface can be refreshed with a clear coat that will prevent the rubber granules from potentially drying out. This can be done by our team or you could do this yourself.
Whether you shovel the snow by hand or using a snowblower, you can continue as in the past although a plastic shovel is recommended instead of a metal shovel. If your snowblower doesn't have plastic pads, you can usually add teflon pads. Whichever your preferred snow clearance method, you'll likely find it easier to scrape because ice won't accumulate on the rubber due to its permeability feature.
You might find that you no longer need to add salt to prevent slippage but if you do, salt or other de-icers won't harm the rubber.
Should something happen, we can remove the damaged section and replace it with new rubber.
It really depends on the project but as a general rule of thumb, the price of rubber surfacing is between asphalt and concrete pavers.
With proper care, a rubber surfaced driveway should last about 20 years depending on the frequency and type of traffic.
